Family Friendly and Affordable Florida Beach Vacation ~ Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Hotel!

by Michelle on August 16, 2012

Florida Beach Vacation Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront

In June my family and I took a fabulous Florida beach vacation at the newly renovated Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Hotel of the Palm Beaches.  This was our second stay at this Hilton for the 2nd year in a row and we plan to go back next year as well.  Why do we love and continue to go back to this awesome Hilton?  Several reasons…

From the moment you drive up you will be greeted by friendly and helpful staff.  Once you check in, head to your room and throw your suit on because you’ll want to spend every moment at the large swimming pool (with kiddie pool and jacuzzi) or on the beautiful beach.

They also have indoor and outdoor beachfront dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner and anything in between so you’ll never need to leave.  The breakfast buffet is an absolute must with everything you can think of including plenty of healthy breakfast options for the adults and kiddos.  We enjoyed it with ocean views and then strolled on over to the pool when we were finished.  We were in heaven!

This is the awesome pool steps away from the beach, beachfront dining and tiki bar!

Here is the gorgeous non-eroded, shell laden beach and one of the largest loggerhead and leatherback turtle nesting grounds in the U.S.!

Loggerhead Marinelife Center

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center for sea turtle rescue, research and education is only miles away!

The Hilton Singer Island recently partnered with the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The hotel obeys all sea turtle ordinances to protect the nesting turtles.  We had a great time visiting the marinelife center.  The kids loved seeing and learning about the rescued turtles!  Other nearby fun and kid friendly attractions include the Lion Country Safari and the Palm Beach Zoo.

If you are looking for more to do onsite, don’t worry, there is plenty!  The beach offers jet skiing, snorkeling, kayaking and surfing with snorkel equipment boogie board, paddle board, surfboard, ocean inner tube and kayak rentals available for your convenience.   If you just want to relax and catch some rays, you’ll additionally find chair, umbrella and cabana rentals available to you.  Or you can just spend your days poolside if that is more your thing.

For those who love to exercise, the hotel also offers a large gym with modern equipment or you can enjoy the ocean air with a nice walk, run or bike ride.  You’ll also find sight seeing tours, fishing, golfing, scuba diving, lots of affordable dining options and of course shopping near by.

We were never at a loss for something to do during our visit.  We even celebrated my daughter’s 5th birthday entirely on the premises.  We enjoyed the pool, a great indoor family lunch, the beach and even a room service dinner for the kids later that night.

Balcony View

The entire week was a blast!  Waking up to the ocean views was my favorite part.  The daily breakfast buffet, tropical drinks and great service at the Hilton Singer Island was a close second.  The clean, newly renovated room and blogging from our balcony wasn’t bad either.  ;)  We’ll definitely be back!

Thank you Hilton Singer Island for providing us with the perfect vacation spot for our family!!!

To enjoy this beautiful, safe and family friendly South Florida oceanfront beach vacation yourself, be sure to check out their special offers to get the best prices available.  There is never a bad time of year to visit Florida!  :)

The Hilton Singer Island provided us with a discounted rate as a thank you for facilitating this review.  All opinions are my own.  Our family truly enjoyed our stay!

How to Melt and Reuse Your Old Broken Crayons!

by Michelle on July 29, 2012

How to Melt and Reuse Crayons

It’s back to school time which means great deals on new supplies, including crayons.  I picked up 4 boxes of 24 ct. Crayola Crayons for $1 the other day by price matching a Toys R Us deal at Walmart.  So it was time to gather up all the old broken crayons and put them to good use.  I had seen many tutorials for how to melt and recycle your old crayons on Pinterest, so we gave it a try.

First we soaked the crayons in water to get the paper off easily.

Next we sprayed a muffin tin with cooking spray, added the peeled broken crayons and baked for about 10 minutes at 250 degrees.  We also added glitter to one batch.  Once baked you can swirl the melted colors with a toothpick or just leave them as they are.  Then let them completely cool before dumping them out of the pan.  We put ours in the refrigerator for a few minutes to speed up the cooling process.

We also made a batch in mini-muffin tins.

Then of course, we played with our new crayons!

Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces for Infant and Toddler Teething Relief ~ What Do You Think?!

by Kaylyn on July 9, 2012

I had a reader ask me the best place to buy Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces and I had no idea what they even were.  Luckily I asked a neighbor and she knew all about them.  Turns out they are necklaces designed for infants and toddlers for natural teething relief.  Who knew?!  Well Kaylyn agreed to write a post to tell you all about them (and even included a picture of her cutie wearing hers).  See what she has to say about them and then share your thoughts/experiences on them with us (good or bad)…

Baltic amber teething necklaces are made for wearing (NOT CHEWING) during the teething stage.  Amber helps with drooling and discomfort during teething, without resorting to drugs.  They contain a natural analgesic and release healing oils when worn against the skin.  Amber is fossilized tree resin/sap, not a stone; therefore it is warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.  Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognized by allopathic medicine.

Wearing Baltic amber necklaces against the skin can have a soothing and calming effect on teething babies and toddlers.  Succinic acid is the most beneficial part of the amber.  There are claims that the darkest colored amber generally contains less succinic acid than lighter colors.  So, the more cloudy or white amber is, the more succinic acid it contains.

There is a lot of fake/man-made amber out there, so before purchasing an amber teething necklace, make sure it is genuine Baltic amber and not imitation amber.  Prices should start around $15 and can be as much as $50 for one amber teething necklace.  Generally, the more rounded the beads, the higher the price of the necklace.  If a necklace is priced really low or discounted, question the vendor about its authenticity.

Here are some reputable websites to purchase a Baltic amber teething necklace…

As a safety feature there is a knot before and after each bead.   The hand tied knot structure ensures that if the necklace is strongly yanked or pulled, only one bead would come loose, rather than all of the beads.  This reduces the chance of a child choking on an amber bead.  Only purchase necklaces with hand tied knots.

Amber teething necklaces are secured with a traditional screw clasp that will break away with force.  You never want your child to have the opportunity to chew on the amber.  It is suggested that you put the necklace on your child and place their clothing over it so it rests against the skin.  The amber will begin to reach your child’s body temperature very quickly and then the child will ignore it’s presence.

The most important thing to remember when buying a necklace is to get the right size if it is for a baby. It should be short enough that the baby cannot get it up and over the chin.  Please refer to the site where you plan on buying for specific sizing, cleaning and safety information.

Please also follow all safety warnings.  Baltic Amber necklaces contain small parts.  As with all jewelry worn by infants and toddlers, children should always be supervised when wearing.  Jewelry should be removed when child sleeps.

So what do you think?  Too dangerous or great idea?  I know these are very popular right now but also somewhat controversial.  What are your thoughts on them?  Do you think they really work?  Let us know what you think or your experience with them in the comments below.
