A Story Before Bed Mega Subscription GiveawayA while back I discovered a site called A Story Before Bed and immediately fell in love with it!  I created a free account and recorded some of the free books with my daughter as well as having my mother record a book for her.  Here are the books we first recorded:  What are Little Boys and Girls Made of? and Baa Baa Black Sheep read by Gianna and me and The Itsy bitsy Spider read by Grandma.  Currently you can record Xander and the Wind, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Baa Baa Black Sheep and I Love Summer all for FREE!

We also recently shared on Facebook my daughter’s adorable Father’s Day gift to her Daddy.  You can check it out HERE.  She immediately played it for him right in bed on Father’s Day morning from my iPhone.  He LOVED it!

Here’s why we all love A Story Before Bed…

  • With 3 subscription levels to choose from you can record as many books as you want.
  • You can record the books yourself for your children or for even more fun you can record the stories with them.
  • You can have distant family members and loved ones record books for your children as well.
  • Your older children who are readers can also record the stories themselves.
  • The recordings can be played back on your computer, your iPhone, or your iPad as many times as you’d like.
  • They can easily be shared via email and even Facebook and make very special gifts.
  • For all you lucky iPad 2 owners you can now record the stories from your iPad 2.
  • Even if you only have a free account they often add new books you can record for free (currently I Love Summer) and send out frequent special promotions.

A Story Before Bed by Nana Plus Free Kids Books for Military Families & Upcoming Giveaway!

by Michelle on April 15, 2011

A Story Before Bed - Read Record Share
I recently shared about A Story Before Bed here in Online Storytime and here when they had a deal on Mamapedia.  I wanted to share about them again today not only because I LOVE this site but because today I have a special story to share read by my mom for my girls.  Special to us anyway!  :)  You can check it out HERE and if you’re so inclined, she reads an Easter story HERE.

So why is this so special you ask?  Well, my mom recently moved away from us back to FL (we’re in NC) and my girls don’t get to see her very often anymore.  So now she can read stories to them that we can watch anytime on our laptop, iPhone, or iPad.  And believe me, they are already asking for more stories read by Nana.

This is just one of the great things about this site.  We can recruit whoever we want to read the girls stories from wherever they may be.  So cool!  But another great thing is we can record the stories ourselves also.  My 3 1/2 yr. old loved doing this!  And as I mentioned you can play back the recordings not only on your computer, but also on your mobile devices.  You can also share them on Facebook or via email.  They do need to make an Android app though.  I’ll send the request.

So imagine how great this service would be  for moms and dads in the military who are serving away from their children.  Well they thought of that and have so far given away 144,500 stories to these families for FREE!  They are hoping to give away a total of 250,000 so if you know of any military families that would be interested please send them HERE.

If you are not in the military but are still interested you can find their subscription prices HERE or you can join for free and start recording the free books just to check it  out.  They are currently offering The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Ba Ba Black Sheep and Xander and the Wind for free.  You can also subscribe to their email newsletter and they will notify you whenever they are offering other books for free or offering discounts on subscription prices.

If you still want more but don’t want to pay the subscription prices at this time, then wait for my giveaway!  At the end of April I will be hosting a giveaway for the Mega Subscription which gives you access to record over 300 books for a full year (a $99.95 value)! So be sure to be on the lookout for when I announce the dates of the giveaway and be sure to come back and enter for your chance to win this awesome subscription!

Our Top 5 Free Online Kids Books Sites

by Michelle on March 15, 2011

Online Kids Books

Being that I am on my laptop a LOT, my almost 4 year old daughter loves reading online kids books with Mommy.  It is a way for her to get my attention while doing something she loves, reading stories.  I wouldn’t say it is a regular routine for us but it is definitely something we both enjoy doing whenever we find the time.  We first discovered we enjoyed this pastime by reading a story from Barnes and Noble’s Online Storytime, or having one read to us I should say.  We then searched for more places to find stories online but had some trouble finding them.  So we turned to Youtube which entertained us for a while but I knew there had to be a better resource for finding online kids books and stories.  After further research I have come up with this list of some of our favorite sites plus some bonus sites we have yet to visit, but all with their own unique characteristics that are sure to bring hours of reading fun!

1- Barnes and Noble’s Online Storytime – Every month Barnes and Noble features a children’s story read by a special person such as the author of the story.  This month the featured story is Charlie the Ranch Dog by Ree Drummond.  You will also find 45% off kids’ dog toys and books.  To hear past featured stories just click on the “See More Storytime Videos” link below the video.  You are sure to find some favorites.

2- A Story Before Bed –  This is probably one of our all time favorite sites for reading books online because you actually get to record yourself reading to view at a later time.  My daughter LOVES this!  It is not a free site but they do have a few books that you can try for free and if you create an account and subscribe to their emails they will often notify you of additional free book promotions.  Although, I do have to say that their paid membership prices are reasonable and probably worth every penny for the treasures you can create.  Plus you can download their iphone app for free and watch your recorded books on your phone.  Another great feature is that you can have a distant relative or loved one record stories too.  We had Nana record The Itsy Bitsy Spider and now my daughter can watch the video of Nana reading a story anytime she misses her.  Recording is easy also just as long as you have a video camera on your computer.  Click here to see one of the first stories we recorded!

3- Buttons Furrytales – Another really cute site that lets you personalize the stories with a name and a character that you design yourself.  There are also  jigsaw and paint features for digital puzzles and coloring which are really fun!  In addition there are several other activities to enjoy including offline ones such as downloading recipes to make.  Buttons Furrytales is an overall fun site and best of all it is totally free to join!

4- Speakaboos – This site offers stories read aloud, songs, nursery rhymes, games and worksheets.  There is lots to see and do here.  They do have a paid membership and offer a 14 day free trial, but there is plenty to do in the “Free Stuff” section.  Just about the whole series of Arthur by Marc Brown  is included in the free section.  All of the free stuff is labeled so be sure to only select those, otherwise you will just be given a preview.  Aside from the site not being completely free, it is still pretty entertaining with a lot to offer.

5- Storyline Online – This is a fantastic site brought to you by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation.  There are many books to choose from and each are read by SAG members such as Betty White, Jason Alexander, James Earl Jones, Amanda Bynes and Melissa Gilbert.  Each book also includes accompanying activities and lesson ideas.  This is another completely free site and you actually get to watch the actors reading the stories in streaming video.  We definitely  recommend this one!

So that is our list of top 5 free online kids books sites.  I hope you are able to check them out with your little ones and determine your favorites too.  Once you get through those you might want to check out these as  well…
